Job Summary:

Custodian Responsibilities:

  • Cleans classroom(s), kitchen, restrooms, and office facilities to insure that they are free of dirt, odors, insects, and vermin.  Cleans and inspects playgrounds to insure that they are free of dangerous objects, debris, and weeds.  Completes according to Center Maintenance Checklist.
  • Notifies supervisor of maintenance needs and/or safety hazards related to all areas of the center so that the Work Request System is notified appropriately.
  • Moves and stores classroom furniture when required by center needs; assist teaching staff with classroom breakdown and setup.
  • Prepares master supply request and submits to supervisor to order necessary janitorial and maintenance supplies to insure daily sanitation requirements of the center are met.  Stores all materials in a locked storage area that is inaccessible to children.
  • Assists supervisor with current inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in learning experiences with the children and parents related to job responsibilities.
  • Takes out scheduled playground equipment before outdoor playtime begins and stores after outdoor playtime is completed.
  • Ensures soft surfacing is maintained in required areas including raking Fibar or sand on a daily basis to maintain a minimum of 6” depth under swings or climbing structures.
  • Waters down hot surfaces when season requires it, including water of sand area for child play.
  • Ensures drinking water is available and accessible to children during outdoor playtime.
  • Uses caution tape to designate unsafe areas to ensure children are not allowed in the area.
  • Has an active role in closedown cleaning process.
  • Ensures facility is secured at the end of the day.
  • Where applicable communicates with custodian or custodian/driver to minimize duplicate ordering, reporting, or cleaning.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
1.   Educational/Experience Requirements:
A.  Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
B. Knowledge of the Basic Food Groups.
C. Knowledge of proper food preparation and storage methods and be able to pass the appropriate County Food Handlers Class.  Must obtain certificate within one month of employment.
D. Must be able to do yard work, and operate weed eater, etc.
E. Must be able to do heavy cleaning and moving of classroom furniture, if appropriate.

2.   Federal, State, County, Legal/Licensing Requirements:
A.  Must be able to prove the right to work in the US by providing appropriate documents to complete the Federal I-9 form.
B.  Must be able to pass a FBI fingerprint and criminal record check.
C.  Must possess a valid health card from appropriate County Health Department.
D.  Must provide proof of immunizations for childhood diseases.
E.  Must be able to pass a company paid physical exam.

3.   Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
4.   Ability to lift at least 25lbs.
5.   Ability to work with and dispose of cleaning chemicals.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience with Head Start or other community programs.
  • Skills in problem solving time management, organization, processing paperwork efficiently, and collecting and interpreting data.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish preferred.

Salary: $7.84 per hour per hour. 40 hours per week, 42 weeks per year.
